My Good Book Radar must be on point these days, because whoa – I’ve been picking fantastic books left and right, and Annie’s Autumn Escape is one of them.
I dived in with optimism, but expecting a single-layer story, maybe. Something enjoyable and simple at the same time. Boy, was I wrong. Annie’s Autumn Escape is not only captivating to the max, but it has also a complex undertone lying under the surface.
The protagonist, Annie, ends up celebrating her sixtieth birthday in Dubai rather than at home; her husband seems to prefer the company of another woman, so her friends organize a semi-luxury trip to cheer her up. A lot of misunderstandings happen next, helping Annie understand that being dropped like a hot potato is not always a bad thing.
The cast of characters is interesting, and they read in a distinctive, clear voice. That’s a feat, because it’s easy to slip and write people like Bella and Caz as too similar. Gerard Butler—it makes sense in the story, I promise—feels realistic and caring, while Keith… well, he’s Keith.
Viggiano’s writing style is hilarious. It has me chuckling here and there, but it also punches me in the face with feelings; whenever mother Evans shows up, both things tend to happen at the same time.
A satisfying ending is the cherry on top. I was afraid that something could ruin things, but nope 😀 yay!
Those 5 stars on GR are well-deserved.

Prior to turning her attention to writing, Debbie Viggiano was, for more years than she cares to remember, a legal secretary. She lives with her Italian husband, a rescued pooch from Crete, and a very disgruntled cat. Occasionally her adult children return home bringing her much joy… apart from when they want to raid the fridge or eat her secret stash of chocolate.
